Botox® & Nuceiva® (botulinum toxin type A)

Botox and Neceiva are brands of botulinum toxin type A used for the prevention and treatment of wrinkles and fine lines. Administration of botulinum toxin for cosmetic purposes first came into practice in 1992, and was approved by Health Canada in 2002. Prior to cosmetic use, botulinum toxin has been safely used for the treatment of medical conditions for many decades, such as strabismus, spasticity, excessive sweating, hyperactive bladder, excessive blinking (blepharospasm), and abnormal muscle contractions (dystonia).

Botulinum toxin is administered by injection, using a very small needle, the same as those used by individuals with diabetes to administer their insulin. Botulinum toxin is a safe, simple, non-surgical way to prevent the development of, and smooth the appearance of existing moderate to severe lines. It is the most common cosmetic treatment in Canada.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription medication. In Canada, it can be prescribed by Nurse Practitioners, Physicians and Dentists.

Botox® Q & A

Is botulinum toxin safe?

Yes. Botulinum toxin is a natural purified protein prescription medication. It is a commonly used method for improving lines and wrinkles that are caused by or exacerbated by muscle contraction, such as prominent frown lines (commonly referred to as the 11’s).

The effects of botulinum toxin are temporary; muscular function typically returns to within 3-4 months. Over time and with repeated use, individuals may require a smaller dose, and less frequently, to maintain results.

How does it work?

Botulinum toxin is a purified neurotoxin that is injected into specific muscles. It works by blocking the signal between the muscle and the brain, preventing the muscles’ ability to contract. When the targeted muscles are relaxed, new wrinkles cannot form and existing wrinkles smooth out and soften in their appearance.

When will I see the results?

Most patients notice results within 2-7 days post treatment, although it may take up to 2 weeks for full effect. This is because the botulinum toxin peptides need time to go to work, making temporary changes that block communication between the brain and the targeted muscles.

Will I look natural?

This is everyone's primary concern - will I look natural, puffy, or frozen? When administered at the appropriate dose and to the appropriate location, a natural look that maintains facial expression can be achieved. The goal is always to look like you, but refreshed.
